Custom Landscape Design

Most yards are not short of ideas — they are short of a plan that survives contact with the ground. We design around how you actually use the property, then build it with our own crew, so nothing gets lost between the drawing and the dirt.

A landscape plan is really a set of decisions about water, light and how people move through a property. Get those three right and the planting looks after itself. Get them wrong and you spend the next ten years fighting a bed that never fills in, a wall that leans a little more every spring, and a low corner that stays soft until June.

Northern Bergen County makes a lot of those decisions for you. As the ground rises toward the Ramapo foothills the lots get steeper, rockier and quicker to shed water, and the honest answer is usually to cut the grade into levels you can actually use rather than to fight it. Down in the older village grids the lots are flatter and tighter, and the constraint is eighty years of oak and maple canopy deciding how much sun anything underneath will ever get. We design for the property in front of us.

What the job includes

  • Retaining walls, sized and drained for the slope they are actually holding
  • Planting beds laid out for how the light moves across your property
  • Stone, steps and edging that match the house instead of fighting it
  • Grading and drainage so water leaves the way you want it to
  • A written plan and a written price before anything is dug

What makes the difference

Why it holds up here

Bergen County has its own rules — freeze-thaw winters, heavy canopy and a lot of slope once you get north of Route 208. This is what we do about them.

Water gets planned first

Where the runoff goes is the first thing we work out, because it is the thing that quietly undoes everything else. Walls, beds and patios get laid out around the drainage rather than dropped on top of it.

Planting for zone 6b/7a

Species picked to come back after a Jersey winter, not just to look good the first spring — and chosen knowing what the deer in this part of the county will and will not walk past.

Grade before decoration

On a foothill lot the retaining walls and terracing are the design. We size and drain them for the slope they are genuinely holding, then the planting sits on top of something that will not move.

Drawing to dirt, one crew

The people who plan it are the people who build it. Nothing gets lost in a handoff to a subcontractor who was never in the conversation.

How it works

Start to finish

01

Walk the property

We come out, look at the grade, the drainage and the light, and listen to what you actually want to do out there.

02

Put it on paper

You get a layout and a written estimate — materials, scope and price — with no obligation to go ahead.

03

Build it

The same crew that quoted the job does the work, start to finish.

04

Leave it clean

Debris hauled, driveway blown, beds edged before we pull away.

Across the county

One county, three different jobs

Bergen County changes character every few miles. A property in the Ramapo foothills and one on a Ridgewood side street want the same crew and a different plan.

Low retaining wall and clipped hedge framing a sharply edged front lawn at a suburban home

Oakland, Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Ramsey

Foothill properties — slope, rock and runoff that has to be sent somewhere deliberate. This is retaining-wall and terracing country. The work is usually turning an awkward grade into two or three levels the family can actually stand on.

Large suburban colonial home with mature foundation plantings, curved beds and a green front lawn

Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, Allendale

Older village lots with mature street trees and real shade. Design here is about working with the canopy rather than against it: shade-tolerant planting, beds that read properly from the sidewalk, and hardscape that suits the age of the house.

Manicured suburban backyard with flowering azaleas, clipped shrubs and a crisp green lawn

Wyckoff, Midland Park, North Haledon, Waldwick

Bigger, flatter suburban lots where the back yard is a room the family uses all summer. Layouts get planned around the patio, the play area and the sightlines from the kitchen window.

Common questions

Before you call

Do you charge for the design?
No. The walk-through and the written estimate are free, with no obligation. You only pay if you decide to build.
How long does a retaining wall take?
It depends on length, height and access, but most residential walls run several working days. We give you a firm window with the estimate rather than a vague guess.
Will the wall hold up through winter?
That comes down to base depth and drainage, which is where most failed walls go wrong. We build for freeze-thaw because we are the ones who would have to come back.
Do you draw a plan before any work starts?
Yes. You see the layout and the written price before anything is dug, so the scope is something we agree on rather than something you discover halfway through.
Can you work with a sloped or rocky lot?
That is most of the northern half of the county, so yes. Slope usually means terracing or a retaining wall sized for what it is actually holding back, and rock usually means the plan gets adjusted around what is under the surface.
