Paver Installation
A paver patio is only as good as what is underneath it. Most of the settled, wavy patios we get called out to look at were laid on a base that was too shallow for a New Jersey winter. We build the base properly, because that is the part you will still be standing on in ten years.
Nearly every settled, wavy patio we get called out to look at has the same story behind it. The surface was fine. The base was too shallow, or too fine a material, or never properly compacted. No amount of good stone on top rescues that — which is why most of the time, and nearly all of the care, goes into the part you will never see again once the job is finished.
That matters more here than it does in a mild climate. Northern New Jersey goes through the freeze-thaw cycle over and over every winter: water gets into the ground, expands, lifts, then lets go. A base that drains and a perimeter that is properly restrained will move a little and settle back. One that holds water will heave, and by the third spring you have a trip hazard and a puddle.
What the job includes
- Patios, walkways, steps and driveway aprons
- Excavation and a compacted base cut for freeze-thaw
- Proper edge restraint so the field does not creep
- Cutting and pattern work done on site to fit the space
- Polymeric jointing and a final compaction pass

Why it holds up here
Bergen County has its own rules — freeze-thaw winters, heavy canopy and a lot of slope once you get north of Route 208. This is what we do about them.
The base is the job
Excavation, a compacted aggregate base built for what the surface has to carry, and bedding laid to a consistent depth. It is the part nobody sees and the only part that decides whether it lasts.
Pitched to drain
Every surface gets a deliberate fall away from the house. Water that cannot sit on the pavers cannot freeze under them.
Edges restrained
A patio or walkway spreads at the edges first. Proper restraint around the perimeter is what stops the outside course creeping away from the rest of it.
Driveways built heavier
A driveway carries a different load to a walkway and gets a deeper base to match. We do not build all three the same way and hope.
Start to finish
Consult and design
We agree the layout, the colours and the materials, and put a written price to it.
Prep the base
Excavate, grade, then build and compact a gravel and sand foundation. This is the part nobody sees and the part that matters most.
Set the pavers
Each stone placed to the chosen pattern, cut in at the edges, then jointed and compacted.
Clean up
Spoil hauled away, surrounds tidied, surface swept before we leave.
One county, three different jobs
Bergen County changes character every few miles. A property in the Ramapo foothills and one on a Ridgewood side street want the same crew and a different plan.
Wyckoff, Midland Park, North Haledon, Waldwick
Back-yard patios, fire-pit surrounds and the run from the driveway to the back door. Open lots with room to do the job properly and a family that will be standing on it all summer.
Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, Allendale
Front walks, stoops and garden paths on older village homes, where the stone has to suit the age of the house and the work has to happen on a tight lot without tearing up the lawn to get there.
Oakland, Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Ramsey
Steps, landings and terraced patios on sloped foothill lots. On a grade the paving and the retaining usually have to be solved as one piece of work rather than two.
