Five miles from the yard. Older, tighter lots with newer infill between them — and a plan that suits whichever one you have.

What a Haskell property actually needs

Haskell sits inside Wanaque Borough — its own ZIP code and its own post office, but not its own municipality, which is why it gets treated as a place in its own right by everyone who lives here. It is also about five miles from our yard, closer than the middle of Wanaque is.

The reason the housing stock looks the way it does is that Haskell was built as a company town. It was formed in 1898 around a smokeless powder mill and named for Jonathan Haskell, president of the company that built it; DuPont bought the operation in 1902 and the mill stopped running in 1926. That origin left a core of tight, older lots laid out for mill workers, and the ZIP still shows the 1940s as the single largest era of building.

What makes Haskell interesting to work in is what came after. The second largest cohort of homes here went up in the 2000s, so a street can run from a 1940s bungalow on a narrow lot to recent construction on a reshaped grade. Those two need genuinely different plans — one is working around mature planting and established drainage, the other is often fixing builder grading that sends water at the house.

What we do

Every service, in Haskell

The same crew handles all of it, so nothing gets handed off to a subcontractor who was never on your property.

Custom Landscape Design

Retaining walls, planting beds and full property layouts designed around how you actually use the yard — then built by the crew that drew it.

Lawn Maintenance & Planting

Mowing, edging, trimming, fertilisation and seasonal planting on a schedule — so the property looks cared for every week, not just after a visit.

Paver Installation

Patios, walkways and driveways laid on a proper base so they stay level through Jersey winters instead of shifting after two seasons.

Top Soils & Mulching

Nutrient-rich topsoil to get growth moving, and clean mulch beds that hold moisture, block weeds and make the whole property read as finished.

Spring & Fall Clean Ups

Leaves, storm debris, cutbacks and bed prep — the two visits a year that decide whether the yard bounces back or falls behind.

Tree Removal

Dead, storm-damaged or badly placed trees taken down safely and cleanly — fully insured, and your yard left spotless when we leave.

Local conditions

What makes Haskell different

Two housing stocks on one street

Mill-era lots from the 1940s and earlier sitting beside 2000s infill. Older properties are worked around what is established; newer ones often need builder grading corrected before anything else.

Low ground near the Wanaque

Back Beach Park's athletic fields flood when the river comes up, which tells you what the low ground here does. Properties near it get drainage settled first.

Mountain behind the town

Haskell runs up against wooded slope. Above the valley floor it is shallow soil over hard rock, so grade and runoff get designed rather than assumed.

Common questions

Haskell, specifically

Is Haskell its own town?
Not officially — it is an unincorporated community inside Wanaque Borough. It has its own ZIP code, 07420, and its own post office, which is why it has always felt like its own place. Either way we cover it.
Our house is newer and the yard slopes toward the foundation. Is that normal here?
It is common on newer construction anywhere, and we see it on the 2000s builds here. It is usually fixable with regrading and a properly placed drain rather than anything dramatic, and it is much cheaper to solve than the damp it eventually causes.
Do you work on the older, narrow lots?
Regularly. Tight access is a scheduling and equipment question, not a reason to say no — it just means the work is planned to get in and out without tearing up what is already there.
